silver sulphadiazine
Last reviewed 01/2018
Silver sulphadiazine is a topical antimicrobial that has broad spectrum activity - see submenu. It is widely used as a topical cream to prevent burn infection. Although widely available, it is associated with a number of important side effects and hence the local burns unit should be consulted before it is administered. Particular contra-indications include application to the face, in pregnancy and to neonates. It is not used to treat the established infection of burns.
It is applied daily at each dressing change. Old silver sulphadiazine is washed off with saline and a new layer of cream applied. Its application is relatively pain-free.
