breast carcinoma in situ

In situ carcinoma of the breast is characterised by the proliferation of malignant epithelial cells within the ducts or lobules without invasion of the surrounding stroma. It represents the earliest stage of breast cancer, and probably, the best opportunity for cure.
Two patterns are defined:
- ductal carcinoma in situ
- lobular carcinoma in situ
