The uses of ergometrine include:
- postpartum haemorrhage - contraction of the uterus results in compression of the spiral arteries and bleeding stops
- following abortion and caesarian section
Ergometrine is NOT used:
- to speed the delivery of a live child
- to cause involution of the uterus
