Major congenital malformations in the gastrointestinal system tend to be the result of an agent affecting organogenesis during the period from the third to the eighth week of pregnancy.

The intestinal loops return to the abdomen by the twelfth week of pregnancy.

Abnormalities include:

  • oesophageal atresia
  • Caroli's disease
  • biliary atresia
  • gut malrotation
  • omphalocoele
  • imperforate anus
  • cleft lip and palate
  • Hirschsprung's disease
  • pyloric stenosis
  • duodenal atresia
