  • cardioversion is effective in most tachycardias - the exceptions are incessant arrhythmias (arrhythmias which are present most of the time and stop and start spontaneously) and torsades de pointes

  • it is not necessary to use cardioversion for many arrhythmias e.g. junctional tachycardias, because they respond well to pharmacological treatment

  • may be required to convert atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter to sinus rhythm
