synovial fluid (normal)

Synovial fluid is normally clear and colourless, with the following features:
- contains hyaluronic acid which is complexed with a protein - of which 60-70% is albumin - and results in the lubricating and viscosity of the fluid
- normal synovial fluid has:
- glucose similar to plasma
- protein level less than plasma - ie less than 30 grams per litre
- few white cells - <200 x 10^6 cells/L mainly mononuclear cells
