prognosis
Last reviewed 01/2018
The prognosis depends on the type of tumour and the aggressiveness of the lesion:
- benign mediastinal tumours, if excised, usually have a good prognosis
- thymomas:
- benign - excellent prognosis but there is a 2% recurrence rare if excision is incomplete
- malignant type I - excellent prognosis if resection is complete
- malignant type II - approximate 20% 5-year survival after treatment.
- neuroblastomas - there may be as high as a 60% 5-year survival rate after treatment
