These include:

  • sudden death
  • cardiac arrhythmias
  • left ventricular failure
  • cardiogenic shock
  • pericarditis
  • rupture of papillary muscle or chordae tendinae:
    • usually presents as acute pulmonary oedema from mitral regurgitation
    • may require urgent surgical treatment
  • ventricular septal defect
  • cardiac rupture and subsequent cardiac tamponade
  • hypertension - in the acute situation lower blood pressures are managed depending on cause
  • iatrogenic - complications of pacing etc.
