Causes include:
- pneumonectomy
- massive pleural effusion
- empyema
- haemothorax
- complete lung collapse or lung consolidation
- neoplasm:
- mesothelioma
- alveolar cell carcinoma
- oedema - if patient over transfused whilst asleep on one side
- fibrosis
- infarction
