obstructive chronic pyelonephritis

Last reviewed 01/2018

Obstruction of the urinary tract results in:

  • increased back-pressure on the kidneys
  • increased frequency of urinary tract infections

Both of these factors cause recurrent episodes of renal inflammation, scarring and parenchymal atrophy.

Obstructive chronic pyelonephritis may be bilateral or unilateral:

  • bilateral disease may be caused by congenital abnormalities of the urethra e.g. posterior urethral valves

  • causes of unilateral disease include:
    • ureteric obstruction
    • renal stones
