benign tumours of salivary glands

Last reviewed 01/2018

Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign tumours of salivary glands followed by Warthin's tumour. Rarer types include oncocytomas and monomorphic adenomas.

They usually present as a slowly growing lump. Most affect the parotid region. True malignant transformation may take place, especially in tumours of minor salivary tissue. If malignancy is suspected, the tissue should be biopsied so that appropriate, definitive treatment can be planned.
