An eosinophil is a white blood cell with characteristic granules in its cytoplasm and a bilobed nucleus
- derived from a promyelocyte pluripotent stem cell within the bone marrow
- eosinophils are capable of phagocytosis
- predominate on the inner surfaces of the body which have contact with the external environment
- are involved with immune and allergic reactions
- represent only 2-5 % of the total leukocyte population
- are instrumental in the fight against parasites that are too big to be phagocytosed
