Acquired, non-accommodative esotropia embraces all types of non-paralytic esotropic strabismus which present after the age of 6 months.
In basic esotropia, deviation is the same for both near and distance. The angle of strabismus is usually smaller than in infantile esotropia but usually increases with time. Treatment is by correction of any refractive error and of amblyopia. Surgery may be necessary.
Young adults may develop esotropia with uncorrected, severe myopia, in which the medial recti become extremely tight. Surgical correction is usually indicated.
