Parkinsonian facies

Last reviewed 01/2018

The parkinsonian facies is characteristic:

  • palpebral fissures are wider than normal
  • the facial muscles are unusually immobile
  • eyes have a staring quality, partly a result of the reduction in the frequency of ocular eye movements
  • the glabellar tap reflex fails to habituate - the parkinsonian patient will blink in time with the taps for as long as the stimulus is applied.
