There are many theories to explain the pathogenesis of non-ulcer dyspepsia:
- excess acid secretion causes gastric and duodenal irritation and inflammation without ulceration
- motor disturbances:
- idiopathic gastroparesis
- small-bowel dysmotility
- gastro-oesophageal reflux
- psychiatric causes:
- depression
- anxiety
- somatization
- augmented visceral perception
- food intolerance
