complications

The complications of bronchiectasis include:

  • life-threatening haemoptysis
    • if haemoptysis 10mL or less over a 24 hour period, treat with an appropriate oral antibiotics; if clinical deterioration, arrange emergency admission to hospital (1)
  • acute infective exacerbations
  • pulmonary hypertension
  • lung abscess
  • brain abscess
  • amyloidosis
  • pleural effusion.
