Androgens have the following physiological effects:

  • male sexual differentiation of the fetus e.g. development of male external genitalia
  • pubertal changes in the male: growth and development of secondary sexual characteristics
  • fertility in the adult male e.g. maintenance of spermatogenesis
  • maintenance of secondary sexual characteristics e.g. beard growth
  • male libido
