cholic acids

Last reviewed 01/2018

The cholic acids are naturally-occurring chenodeoxycholic acid and its synthetic derivative, urosdeoxycholic acid. Both are used in the oral dissolution of cholesterol gallstones. Ursodeoxycholic acid has an unlicensed use in primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis.

The vast majority of the cholic acid is absorbed in the terminal ileum, conjugated in the liver and excreted in bile.
