Causes include:
- maternal systemic lupus erythematosis; usually caused by transfer to the neonate of anti-SSA/Ro or anti-SSR/La antibodies across the placenta in up to 25% of mothers who have SLE
- transposition of the great arteries
- after cardiac surgery or damage by infarction
- rarely, other maternal connective tissue diseases
