causes of malpresentation and malposition

In most cases malpresentation and malposition does not have a pathological basis. However, some maternal and foetal factors may predispose to the condition:

Maternal factors:

  • pelvic inflammation
  • pelvic tumour / fibroid
  • arcuate or septate uterus
  • oligohydramnios
  • placenta praevia

Foetal factors:

  • prematurity
  • multiple pregnancy
  • fetal malformation e.g. hydrocephalus
  • intrauterine death
