extrapyramidal syndromes

Motor syndromes caused by the effects of neuroleptic drugs on the extrapyramidal system include:

  • akathisia - restlessness
  • dystonia - muscle stiffness
  • oculogyric crisis - involuntary eye-rolling
  • opisthotonus - torticollis
  • Parkinsonism - tremor, shuffling gait etc
  • tardive dyskinesia - face and tongue symptoms

The various syndromes can be mistaken for histrionic or hysterical reaction.
