tumours of the conjunctiva

Tumours of the conjunctiva are rare.

Benign lesions include:

  • papillomata and cysts - these are excised for cosmetic purposes

  • naevi
    • these are darkly coloured swellings near the limbus
    • excision may be required for cosmesis
    • an increase in size or vascularity is regarded with suspicion - this may indicate the formation of a malignant melanoma

Malignant lesions include:

  • carcinoma

  • malignant melanoma - these are treated by wide excision
