tumours of the conjunctiva

Tumours of the conjunctiva are rare.
Benign lesions include:
- papillomata and cysts - these are excised for cosmetic purposes
- naevi
- these are darkly coloured swellings near the limbus
- excision may be required for cosmesis
- an increase in size or vascularity is regarded with suspicion - this may indicate the formation of a malignant melanoma
Malignant lesions include:
- carcinoma
- malignant melanoma - these are treated by wide excision
