Staphylococcal pneumonia accounts for about 2% of pneumonias in the UK, more often acquired during prolonged stay in institutions than from the community.
There is widespread infection with abscess formation. Usually it is secondary to influenza virus infection.
Primary infection is most common in children, often through passage in a nursery. Pneumonia may also arise subsequent to staphylococcal septicaemia but with few pulmonary symptoms.
