Infection with Plasmodium malariae, follows a relatively benign course.

The fever caused by P. malariae classically recurs every fourth day (i.e. days 1,4,7 etc) and the clinical picture is sometimes called quartan malaria.

Is uncommonly seen in the UK (1).

5-10% of malariae malaria presents over 1 year after infection.
