urethral caruncle

Last reviewed 01/2018

This is a reddened area involving the posterior margin of the urethral orifice. It is believed to be due to the prolapse of the posterior wall of the urethra. A caruncle is generally asymptomatic and found in postmenopausal women. Occasionally they may present with dyspareunia and/or vaginal bleeding.

Treatment is generally with diathermy or surgical excision.
