Salmonella spp (nontyphoidal)

  • antibiotic therapy is indicated only in high-risk children to reduce the risk of bacteremia and extraintestinal focal infections
  • preferred therapy – ceftriaxone
  • alternative agents -  azithromycin, ciprofloxacin (1)

Salmonella typhi

  • preferred therapy – third-generation cephalosporins
  • alternative agents -  chloramphenicol (2)

Salmonellosis is a notifiable disease
