The causes of type B lactic acidosis include:

  • biguanide drugs e.g. phenformin
  • acute liver failure
  • ethanol and methanol poisoning
  • leukaemia or lymphoma
  • intravenous administration of fructose or sorbitol e.g. during parenteral nutrition
  • thiamine deficiency
  • salicylate poisoning
