differential diagnosis

  • enteritis - accompanied by diarrhoea
  • urinary tract infection
  • neonatal intestinal obstruction from duodenal atresia, any other form of intestinal atresia, volvulus neonatorum; presence or absence of bile in vomitus depends on the site of obstruction
  • pyloric sphincter spasm
  • cranial birth injury or any cause of increased intracranial pressure
  • overfeeding - the only feature is vomiting (which is not projectile and may contain bile)
  • milk allergy
  • adrenal insufficiency
  • uraemia
