Possible causes - in order of frequency - include:
- exogenous oestrogens
- atrophic endometritis and vaginitis
- endometrial carcinoma
- endometrial or cervical polyps
- endometrial hyperplasia
- cervical carcinoma
- ring pessary
- ovarian oestrogen secreting tumour
