In the period after surgery for imperforate anus, anal dilation is a vital part of treatment. It begins 2 weeks after operation, and requires a carefully-graded use of dilators by the baby's parents for several months. The non-dilated anus heals closed and the child suffers an intractable stricture.
Faecal incontinence is managed by enemas and medication to slow colonic transit time. A change in diet may help. The bowel management program should be completed before the child starts schooling.
