HPV and genital cancer

  • HPV-DNA is found in 85-100% of high-grade cervical precancer

  • infection with HPV type 16 or 18 has been associated with a higher rate of progression of cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions and cancer (1)

  • one study in 106 early carcinomas found the following serotypes:
  • HPV 16 55%
  • HPV 18 17%
  • HPV 33 6%
  • HPV 35 1%
  • unidentified HPV 10%
  • No HPV 16% (Favre et al Lancet 1990)

  • The link between HPV and cervical cancer is strong and epidemiologically it may be considered to be causal
