    • the most common micro-organisms are the mycobacterium avium complex

  • systemic fungal infection:
    • Cryptococcus neoformans
    • Histoplasma capsulatum in the Americas

  • candidiasis

  • CMV disease:
    • retinitis
    • colitis
    • oesophagitis
    • encephalitis
    • radiculitis

  • neoplastic disease:
    • Kaposi's sarcoma
    • high-grade B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

  • neurological complications:
    • AIDS dementia complex
    • progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy
    • primary cerebral lymphoma
    • peripheral neuropathy or myopathy which may be complications of nuceloside analogue therapies
