Causes include:
- benign essential tremor
- parkinsonism (resting tremor)
- cerebellar disease (intention tremor)
- thyrotoxicosis
- alcoholism
- anxiety
- hypothermia
- neurosyphilis
- drugs, e.g. tricyclic antidepressants
- heavy metals, e.g. mercury
