Distribution of drug resistant malaria
- chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria is now widespread (effectively
universal) P. falciparum has also developed resistance to a variety of other
agents in certain areas
- currently no recorded drug resistance to P. ovale and only 1 report of
drug-resistant P. malariae (to chloroquine)
- chloroquine-resistant P. vivax is found in the Indonesian archipelago; the
Malay Peninsula, including Myanmar, and eastward to Southern Vietnam and may
have spread further
- P. vivax with reduced susceptibility to primaquine is found in South-East Asia and Oceania and higher doses of primaquine are required to achieve radical cure of this parasite from those areas. A higher dose may also be required for P. vivax from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and South America
