Cyclosporin interacts with several drugs, some causing increased levels of cyclosporin, others, reduced levels.
Drugs that increase the levels of cyclosporin in the blood include:
- ketoconazole and other anti-fungals
- some calcium channel blockers e.g. diltiazem and verapamil
- oral contraceptives
- erythromycin
Drugs than induce liver enzymes, reduce the levels of cyclosporin in the blood include:
- barbiturates
- phenytoin
- carbamazepine
- rifampicin
Increased blood levels of cyclosporin may result in toxic side-effects while reduced levels increase the risk of rejection or treatment failure.
