osteomyelitic septic arthritis
Last reviewed 01/2018
If the growth plate lies within the capsule of the joint then the subperiosteal pus from an osteomyelitic abscess may discharge into the joint.
The following joints may be infected in this way:
- in the lower limb - hip and knee
- in the upper limb - shoulder, elbow and wrist
In the neonate, infection can easily cross the growth plate and invade the epiphysis. Pus may subsequently enter the joint space.
