The pathogenesis of bronchiolitis includes:
- bronchial obstruction caused by oedema, mucous debris and viral invasion
- air trapping, where air enters the alveoli and is unable to leave
- atelectasis
- reduced ventilation
It commonly occurs in infants with chronic lung disease - for example those ventilated as neonates.
