The most common presenting symptoms are (1):
- sore throat - 90%
- lump in neck - 80%
- otalgia - 80%
Dysphagia may also be a presenting symptom.
A significant proportion present with a metastatic lump node.
Carcinomatous lesions are usually ulcerated. Lymphomas and salivary gland tumours are usually smooth.
