- multiple system atrophy
- previously Shy–Drager syndrome
- olivopontocerebellar atrophy
- striatonigral degeneration
- progressive supranuclear palsy
- post-encephalitis
- toxins:
- carbon monoxide
- copper
- manganese
- other:
- trauma e.g. boxing
- Wilson's disease
