The following features should be assessed when examining the movement of the wrist:

  • crepitations in the radio-ulnar and radio-carpal joints
  • dorsiflexion (normally >75 degrees)
  • palmarflexion (normally >75 degrees)
  • radial and ulnar deviation measured as the angle between the forearm and the middle metacarpal, normally >20 and >35 degrees respectively
  • pronation and supination, measured as the angle between the vertical and a held pen, normally >75 and >80 degrees respectively
