recurrent inguinal hernia

The incidence of recurrence of inguinal hernia after an initial operation varies in the literature between 0.6% and approximately 10%. The aetiology of recurrence includes:

  • wound infection
  • tension on wound:
    • excessive tension in repair
    • straining, for example caused by:
      • persistent cough
      • prostatism
      • constipation
  • poor surgical technique
