There are no hard and fast rules regarding initial doses of insulin in newly diagnosed type I diabetics. As a guide however an initial dose of 0.5 units per Kg per day given as two equal doses with each dose being a third short-acting, two thirds intermediate-acting insulin is as good an approximation as any.

It should be remembered that in the first 2 to 3 weeks of IDDM there may be a lower insulin requirement - the honeymoon period.
