Start with 1.5% glucose; use a higher concentration if patient is obviously fluid overloaded.
Instill two litres of dialysate into the abdomen through the catheter. Exchange hourly:
- 20 minutes for instillation
- 20 minutes for equilibration
- 20 minutes for drainage
Encourage the patient to mobilise during equilibration to improve diffusion across the peritoneal membrane.
Continue dialysis for 48-72 hours.
Observe:
- blood pressure 4 hourly
- body weight 6 hourly
