group G streptococci

Lancefield Group G streptococci are a heterogenous group in which no species has yet been recognised. They share characteristics with Group A and C streps. They are found in the throat in two colonial forms:
- large colony - related to Group A and C; may cause endocarditis, septicaemia, tonsillitis, and skin infections
- small colony - rare. Occasionally found in the throat and gut. They are of low pathogenicity and rarely cause abdominal abscess.
