The most common cause is arterial occlusion, usually of the superior mesenteric artery.

Classification:

  • thromboembolic arterial occlusion
  • mesenteric venous occlusion
  • systemic vasculitis
  • cardiovascular causes
  • secondary to intestinal obstruction
    • strangulated hernia
    • intussusception - usually in children
    • volvulus - usually small bowel or sigmoid colon
