Possible investigations include:

  • full blood count
  • iron, ferritin, folate and red cell folate
  • ESR and CRP
  • stool examination - microscopy, test for the presence of reducing substances and fat globules
  • stool culture
  • hydrogen breath test - this test allows the diagnosis of incomplete carbohydrate digestion and absorption in a non-invasive manner.
  • sweat test - this will identify cystic fibrosis and discriminate similar presenting conditions such as congenital pancreatic hypoplasia.
  • small bowel biopsy, looking also for antigliadin antibody
