Gum hypertrophy may be caused by various drugs including:

  • phenytoin
  • nifedipine
  • cyclosporin
  • oral contraceptive with high oestrogen concentration - now uncommon

Other causes of gum hypertrophy include:

  • scurvy
  • pregnancy
  • gingivitis
  • acute leukaemia - typically acute myeloid leukaemia
