There are four main uses for Syntocinon:
- to induce labour - for the post-term foetus, missed abortion or hydatidiform mole
- to augment labour - where inadequate uterine contraction is slowing an otherwise normal labour
- management of the 3rd stage - i.m. 5-10 U following delivery of the shoulders is used to prevent postpartum haemorrhage - the combination of Syntocinon and ergometrine (Syntometrine) is also effective
- therapeutic abortion - abortion is induced with prostaglandins; contractions may be augmented with Syntocinon
