Treatment of aplastic anaemia has three objectives:

  • identify and eliminate underlying aetiology if possible
  • supportive care - transfusion of red cells and platelets, and antibiotics
  • specific therapy to restore normal haematopoiesis:
    • drug therapy
      • androgens, e.g. oxymetholone } useful in mild or
      • lithium } moderate aplasia
    • bone marrow transplantation
  • anti-thymocyte and anti-lymphocyte globulins
    • others
