Causes include:
- perforated viscus e.g. perforated duodenal ulcer, perforated diverticulum
- iatrogenic e.g. post surgery
- bacteria - gas producing infections
- air originating from the lung e.g. fistula
- gynaecological e.g. abortion, water skiing
- peritoneal dialysis
